My daughter, Amanda, is a high school senior and has three criteria for her college search, in order of priority: 1) cheerleading, 2) sororities with mansions, and 3) an academic program that matches her interest du jour, which has ranged from physical therapy to actuarial science to special education to international relations. Yet when she honed in on her final choice of universities, one of the reasons she cited was
“I like how they emphasize serving the community.”

She mentioned this after we attended an all-day visit in which the college admissions office pulled out all the stops to make the campus gorgeous, the students welcoming, the food delicious, the professors brilliant, the administrators accessible, and the price tag reasonable. (“There are scholarships,” they tell you, but of course you need to practically write a business plan to discern the full potential of financial aid options. But I digress.)
