Me and my family circa 2009 |
Welcome to my blog. I am a mother, wife, and self-proclaimed bleeding heart.
My day job is writing grants to fund programs for vulnerable children. My night job is teaching composition at the local community college. My 24/7 job is my teenagers, of course.
I get rejuvenated at my church, St. John's Lutheran Church, in Des Moines, Iowa, a fine group of people who generously invited my husband, Bob, to be their pastor his first call out of seminary (sort of a fourth career, if you will). It was a call that came after six years at the seminary, which is supposed to take four. Some do it in three. Year six for us was spent cohabitating with liver failure. I'm usually confused by faith. I don't get prayer and not to be cliche, but I certainly don't get how an almighty God can let bad things happen to innocent people. Yet I'm sure of the power of the faith community. And I don't mean the Pat Robertson-type faith, nor the bloviating judgmental right wing-nut kind of faith. I am referring to the Oscar Romero-type faith. The kind that is connected to the disconnected. You see what I mean about the bleeding heart?
The previous paragraph is what I'm hoping to write about in a memoir I'm calling "Follow You Into the Dark" about faith and doubt. Illness and healing. Authority and rebellion. I'm pleased to report that I have 100 pages written. I was able to submit them for my final manuscript for my MFA, but already know that they all need to be re-written. Completely rewritten. The tone is all wrong. As is the structure. Plus, it's boring.
Which brings me back to my day job, night job, and 24/7 job. Now is not the time to write a book. So I blog. My professional portfolio is here. And I appreciate you stopping by. You are all lovely wonderful people and I give thanks everyday for all of you.
Sincerly yours in love,
Terri Mork Speirs
